The Scottish Handball Association CEO, Ewan Hunter, has been elected to the European Handball League Board (EHLB) at their recent AGM in Cologne. The EHLB is one of the Commissions, or advisory boards, that supports the European Handball Federation (EHF) as it works to continue to grow and develop this major sport across Europe. Ewan was elected to the seat on the Board that specifically represents smaller, emerging nations in Handball and he is determined to help support the work to continue to develop Handball through the competition structures that exist across all European nations.
Ewan said: "I'm delighted to have been elected to the EHLB. Now we get to work to support the fantastic efforts of the EHF and all our European colleagues as we collectively develop this fantastic sport. In fact, we have already started to develop the idea I introduced a few months ago that is aimed at opening up the lowest reaches of European competition to more clubs, espeically those from smaller, emerging Handball nations like Scotland, but also like many others across Europe. We have such busy calendars, it is important that we integrate as many opportunities as possible for our players to play at the highest level they can. As our sadly missed great friend to Handball, Morten Stig Christensen, said a couple of years ago in Copenhagen '....there is no point in us all jumping on the train journey to the future of Handball and turning around to realise that we have left half the passengers on the platform'. I intend to continue to work to fulfil that ambition during my tenure over the next 4 years, and very much look forward to working with colleagues across Europe to make a difference. Of course, in particular, I look forward to working with my colleagues on the EHLB, Frank Bohmann (Germany, Vice-Chair), Patrick Hitz (Switzerland), Nikolas Larsson (Sweden, Chair), Taneli Tiilikainen (Finland) and Miha Pantelic (Slovenia)".

Notes: Originally founded in 1972, the Scottish Handball Association employs 4.5 people and was announced as Sport Governing Body of the Year 2022 at the Scottish Sports Awards ceremony in December 2022. Working closely with SportScotland, the European Handball Federation (EHF), the International Handball Federation (IHF), the SHA enables thousands of children and young people to play Handball across Scotland. We also deliver training to many young sports leaders across Scotland. There are many primary and secondary School Handball Festivals as a result; and we see many young athletes continue their Handball journey by joining their local clubs. A number have gone on to play professionally with European clubs, as well as representing Scotland and Team GB in international competition. We have vibrant domestic league and cup competitions. The current highlight of the domestic season is the season-ending British Handball Super Cup – where the top two teams from Scotland (Women and Men) play against the top two teams from England. The NorDan British Handball Super Cup was broadcast live on BBC Sport in May 2022 and May 2024, and was broadcast live on other streaming platforms in 2023 and 2025.
